Beat the Heat: Saving on Air Conditioning

The time is short between high heating bills and high cooling bills. When spring is gone and the heat of summer kicks in, that utility money you saved for a few weeks vanishes once again.

The good news is that, unlike with heating, there are many ways to save on your cooling bill. After all, in most places air conditioning is a luxury, not a necessity. If you just can’t do without A/C to cool your house, try these tips to at least cut down on the bill.

Use a Smart Thermostat

With advances in technology come some pretty money saving features. If you haven’t upgraded your thermostat in a while, it’s time. A programmable, or smart, thermostat lets you have control over your cooling—and your spending. You can set it high for the hours when you aren’t home, or set a different temp for nighttime versus daytime. Some thermostats can even be controlled via an app, so the house will be nice and cool when you walk through the door.

Use a Fan

In most places, there will be many days when a fan will suffice. If you cool off the old fashioned way you will still use electricity, but not nearly as much as your air conditioning unit will use. Turn the fan on while you are sitting watching TV or using your SideMoney app, often enough you’ll be more than comfortable. If you don’t have ceiling fans in your house, you might want to invest in a few, especially in the bedrooms and living room. This will help you keep the thermostat lower.

Enjoy the Heat

It’s summer! It’s supposed to be hot. If it’s not brutally hot, sometimes all you really need is a change in attitude. Have a quick cool shower and put the temp up on that thermostat. Remember when it was below zero a few months ago and you couldn’t wait for a hot summer day? Enjoy it!

Tons of Other Ways to Save (and Earn!)

There are many other ways to save on your air conditioning bill. For example, close the curtains or blinds when the sun is shining in, and turn off lights when you don’t need them (they generate heat). When you are cooking, don’t use the oven on super hot days. Use a crockpot or toaster oven instead. Hang your clothes outside instead of firing up the drier. It will only heat up your house and it is the single biggest energy using appliance you have, which means more money.
