New Home? The Equipment You Need to Stock Your Kitchen

Moving into your own home for the first time can be a very exciting, yet overwhelming experience. There will be several things you will need to acquire for your new home, especially items for your kitchen. If you intend to do any amount of cooking in your new place, or if you are new to cooking, you will need some vital kitchen essentials, including the following:

A Good Set of Pots and Pans

To prepare a meal in your kitchen, you are going to need a good set of pots and pans. They do not have to be the most expensive to be effective, but you should invest at least $100 into your pots and pans in order to prevent the need for constant replacement. These items will be used the most in your kitchen, so you want to choose something that will last for several years before you need to replace them.

You can purchase cookware that is an all-in-one set or you can buy them individually. Either way, your cookware should include the following: a stock pot or Dutch oven, a sauté pan with a lid, at least one frying pan, and a small sauce pan.

In addition to pots, you will also need one or two sheet pans and a 9×13 inch-baking pan. If you enjoy baking, you may also want to invest in two round cake pans and a muffin pan as well.

Utensils

There are several utensils that you will use regularly in your kitchen. You will need a variety of spoons. One should be a mixing spoon that can also double as a serving spoon. A slotted spoon is also very handy. A ladle is necessary to easily dish soup, stew, or any recipe that is mostly liquid. Other utensils should include a spatula, whisk, and a large serving fork.

In addition to your serving and cooking utensils, you should also invest in some good knives. Try to avoid inexpensive knives, as they are often cheaply made and do not work well. You will need a sturdy, sharp knife to prevent any injuries while you are cooking. A good chef’s knife or Santoku knife are great to have for most any use. You may also want to get a good serrated knife and paring knife for smaller cutting jobs.

Small Appliances

Your small appliances can be lifesavers in the kitchen. They will help you expedite almost anything when you are cooking. A hand mixer is a great tool to have in the kitchen. You can make bread dough, mashed potatoes, or cakes much faster with a hand mixer. A microwave is another must-have. You may also want a toaster, toaster oven or food processer, but they are not necessary.

Prep Tools

Prep tools include anything that will help you prepare a meal. You will need some mixing bowls in different sizes, mixing spoons and spatulas, measuring cups and spoons, and a cutting board. A colander for draining pasta and washing produce is also helpful.
