Summer is a hot but exciting time for kids. School is out, and they have plenty of free time spend playing in the sun. If you don’t have a swimming pool, or if you are looking for some water play ideas, here are several great activities that utilize things you already own and are sure to cool the kids off all summer long.
Sponge bombs are not a take on a funny cartoon for kids, but rather a very entertaining way to pass away some time on a sweltering summer day. For this project, all you need are inexpensive sponges that you can get at any dollar store, and a few mop buckets from around the house. Cut the sponges into long strips and tie several strips together in the center so that they make fun pom-pom creations. Give each child a few of the sponge bombs along with a bucket of water. Soak the sponge bombs in water and allow them to go at it. They can throw them at one another without you worrying about anyone getting hurt. The kids will also enjoy throwing the bombs at a wooden fence or on the sidewalk to see what kind of fun shapes they can create. This will provide hours of fun in the sun with little to no clean up!
If it’s sizzling outside, why not kill two birds with one stone and have a car wash? This will not only let the kids cool off, but will also help get the family car clean. However, keep in mind that this is intended to be fun for the kids. You may not end up with the cleanest car in the neighborhood afterward, but it will certainly be cleaner than before!
If you are nervous about your kids washing your brand new paint job, you can offer alternatives. Let them wash their bikes instead! Provide some liquid soap, washcloths, buckets and a hose, and let them have fun soaking up the summer day.
Trampoline Sprinkler Jump
If you have a trampoline and a sprinkler, you have the makings for an awesome summer afternoon. Trampolines can get quite hot in the summer sun, so cool them off by placing a sprinkler underneath. The water will shoot up through the trampoline, cooling the mat, while the kids jump and leap to their hearts’ content.
Water Gun Painting
Another amazing summer activity is shooting water guns. You can make it even more fantastic by incorporating an art activity. Add some food coloring to several cups filled with water. Then, tape heavy craft paper to a fence or lay it in the grass. Allow each child to fill his or her water gun with a color and shoot it at the paper. Before you know it, you will have some easy, inexpensive and eye-catching artwork. Take note that you may want the kids to wear old clothes or bathing suits for this activity as it can get quite colorful!
