It’s finally here! The traditional start of summer is Memorial Day weekend. This is generally when the first big backyard barbecues happen, when the first big parades occur, and when warm weather fun kicks into high gear. You may have to travel from some parts of the country if you really want to enjoy summer weather on Memorial Day, but no matter where you are, this is the first of the big summer weekends when you should be taking some time off.
Here are a few places that offer something unique to celebrate the big weekend.
Want summer? You’ll get it here. Memorial Day weekend is actually the end of the nice weather season in the desert. Soon after, the temps will be soaring and everyone will be heading to the beach. This is a great time to take advantage of special pricing in the area. Plus, there are usually tons of end-of-season sales at the many shops and boutiques. What better way to celebrate the start of summer than with a bargain destination!
If you’re all about the patriotism, you really can’t get any better than the nation’s capital for Memorial Day weekend celebrations. The city will be all decked out in red, white, and blue, and there will be non-stop events. Don’t miss the National Memorial Day Parade along the Mall, and the National Memorial Day Concert at the capitol building. For something more somber, head to Arlington National Cemetery for the laying of the wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns. To save money, you can stay cheaply outside the city and take the excellent public transportation into the events.
New York City
In the City, Memorial Day coincides with one of the biggest weeks in New York City: Fleet Week. The week is filled with events, including free concerts, parades, free ship tours and a chance to meet and interact with sailors, marines, and members of the coast guard. The city pulls out all the stops for this celebration that has been going on since 1984.
You may want to change it up from the patriotic celebrations to an all out toga party in New Orleans. Memorial Day means the Greek Festival in the Big Easy. Experience traditional music and food and a huge party on Sunday. If you wear a toga, you can get in for free!
