Summer’s here and seems to be roaring in with record heat in many parts of the U.S. Well, guess what? If you’re stuck in the heat, there’s an app for that!
Your smartphone may just turn out to be your best friend when you’re stuck inside because of the heat. Here are some apps that can help you not only stay safe in the heat, but may just help you stay cool, too.
Knowing the weather is key to beating the heat. After all, if you’re planning a Sunday picnic at the park, it would be good to know if it’s going to be 100 degrees and humid (or if there is a major storm coming). Weatherbug claims to have the largest professional weather network in the world, and this app is so strong, that just might be true.
Keep yourself safe by using Weatherbug’s current and hourly forecasts, or plan wisely with the 10-day look ahead. The app has accurate and animated weather maps and the interface is clean and easy to use.
Everyone knows how important it is to stay hydrated when it’s hot, but few people know how much water intake that is. Most people just don’t drink enough water during the day. That’s where Waterlogged can help. All you have to do is snap some pictures with the app of your containers and it logs how much you have drunk. There are reminders and charts to keep you on track.
The app also integrates with Apple Health and Fitbit, as well as other health apps, and is an easy way to track and improve your daily water intake.
According to SkinCancer.org, one in five Americans will develop skin cancer in the course of a lifetime. Yet, many people still do not use sunscreen. U.S. government statistics say that only 34% of women and 14% of men use sunscreen. sunZapp may not apply sunscreen for you, but it can let you know when the sun’s rays are at their most harmful. The app uses your location information combined with NOAA’s hour-by-hour UV Index and some personal information that you provide (age, skin tone, hair and eye color, medicines).
The result is a calculation of how much time it will take for you to get sunburn. That way you can limit your exposure. In addition, there is some other helpful info like precautions you can take, and if you tell it that you have applied sunscreen, it will remind you when it’s time to re-apply.
One way to beat the heat is to stay inside. To keep it interesting why not check out the latest movies. Get instant access to show times and tickets for literally thousands of theaters, which means you’ll find one near you. You can find a cool, dark theater by searching theater names or by a film’s title. Or, Fandango can show you the latest releases so you can discover something new. There also are alerts for upcoming films so you can plan ahead via the Spotlight view.
Watch trailers, view clips, read reviews from Rotten Tomatoes, view show times and get your tickets, all at the tip of your fingers. All you have to do is get yourself to the theater to enjoy the free air conditioning.
When all else fails, get yourself to someplace cooler. The TripAdvisor app can help you find a place to go and then tell you what’s fun to do when you get there. Millions of reviews help you plan the perfect trip with some assurance about what you’re paying for. TripAdvisor links directly to hotel and car rental booking sites and sometimes lets you make reservations at some restaurants right from the app. Some hotel reviews even have photos of specific rooms and you can easily compare prices. Once you visit, you can add your own reviews too and help build the community.
Summer means heat. And while most days are great and all you need is a little extra water, some days you just want to stay out of it altogether. And thankfully, there’s an app for that!
