4 Ways to Save Money on Family Friendly Beverages

Family friendly beveragesEveryone gets thirsty, but sometimes plain water gets a little boring. The problem is that many beverages for your family are expensive. Items like soda and juice can really consume large portions of your grocery budget.

Here are some ideas for ways to give your family fun drinks that aren’t too expensive.

1. Limit to One Fancy Beverage Per Day

Drinking water is the best way to cut beverage costs. So have your family do that the majority of the day. Pick one meal where you’ll drink something fancy, and stick to it.

Everyone will get a treat for their taste buds, and they’ll also stay hydrated from all the water.

If you eat dinner together, it’s a great meal to pick. If not, pick any meal you’d like to offer this splurge.

2. Make Homemade Cool Drinks

Paying for factories to create your drinks adds a lot to the cost. Instead, buy some simple ingredients and make them yourself. You can keep them in the fridge so you have them on hand when you’re ready.

Here are two recipes to try:

Lemonade

In a half-gallon sized pitcher, add 1 cup of concentrated lemon juice and 1 cup of water. Stir well.

Add water to fill the pitcher and carefully stir it again. Serve with ice cubes.

You can adjust the lemon and sugar to suite your individual tastes.

Iced Tea

Bring 4 cups of water to a boil. Add 4 family sized tea bags. Let brew for several minutes.

Remove the tea bags and pour tea into a gallon sized pitcher or jar. Add cold water to fill.

Place in fridge and let sit until chilled.

Add lemon juice, honey, or sugar to taste when you’re ready to serve.

Both of these beverages use fairly inexpensive ingredients, and will offer a nice change of pace from plain water.

3. Save Money on Hot Beverages

When it’s cold outside, there’s nothing like a warm drink to warm up your body and spirit. But, itty bitty packs of cocoa or spiced cider mix are expensive!

Buying ingredients to create your own costs a lot less, and they’re simple to make. Here are two tried and true recipes:

Hot Chocolate

Makes 4 large servings

In a sauce pan, mix 1/3 cup of water with 1/4 cup of unsweetened cocoa powder and ½ cup of sugar. Stir, and then heat over medium heat until mixture boils. Stir frequently during this time to ensure the sugar dissolves.

Let the mixture boil for 1 minute. Then, add four cups of milk, and slowly heat until the cocoa is the perfect temperature for your family.

Pour into individual mugs and serve.

Spiced Cider

Makes 8 large servings

8 cups apple juice

2 tsp. ground cinnamon

1/8 tsp. nutmeg

4 whole cloves

1 orange cut into slices with peel on

In a large pot, combine the juice and all the other ingredients. Stir gently.

Let heat over medium heat until warm.

Strain to remove the cloves and orange.

Pour into individual mugs and serve.

You can store extra in the fridge and reheat as desired.

4. Opt for the Juice Concentrate

If you’ll be drinking juice with your breakfast, the cheapest route is to purchase 100% juice concentrate from the freezer section of your grocery store.

As you mix it up, you can even add a bit of extra water to dilute it a bit and help it stretch more.

Orange juice is among the most expensive juice concentrate. Apple is usually the cheapest, so by simply changing the type of juice you drink you can save a lot of money.
